Abstract

Background : Hypertension is a disease in the body with the potential to cause serious complications so that it requires optimal self-care management. Hypertension cases in Palembang City with a significant spike in 2021-2023. The success of self-care is greatly influenced by self-efficacy and long experience of suffering from the disease, so it is important to research it in the management of hypertension. Objective : To analyze the relationship between self-efficacy and length of suffering with self-care management in hypertensive patients, as well as to describe the characteristics of respondents. Method: The type of study was quantitative with a non-probability sampling design through convenience sampling techniques on 65 respondents with hypertension (January–March 2025). Data were collected from the self-efficacy and self-care management questionnaires, and then analyzed with the Kendall Tau-b test. Results: Showing the results of the respondents' age characteristics with a median age of 52 years with a minimum range of 39 years – a maximum of 59 years, the majority of women (66.2%) and secondary education (61.5%). Long suffering from hypertension was the most in the 1–5 years category (43.1%). The majority of the self-efficacy rate is moderate (44.6%) and self-care management is adequate (38.5%). The Kendall Tau-b test showed a strong association between self-efficacy and self-care management (τ = 0.653; p < 0.001). Longevity was also significantly associated with self-care management, although it tended to be weak (τ = 0.245; p = 0.028). Conclusion : This study shows that self-efficacy has a strong positive relationship with self-care management in people with hypertension, while long suffering from hypertension is significantly related but with the strength of the relationship. Advice: Education for hypertension patients is needed to support improved self-efficacy and self-care management.
