Abstract
Background: Children with Special Needs (CSN) are individuals who have physical, intellectual, social, or emotional impairments, yet still experience sexual development according to their age. Of the 570,000 children recorded, 3,679 have experienced sexual violence. The lack of understanding of sexuality education in children with special needs increases the risk of inappropriate behavior and vulnerability to sexual violence. The role of parents becomes crucial, yet they often face challenges related to knowledge, communication, cultural factors, and self-confidence. Purpose : To explore the experiences of parents in providing sexuality education to children with special needs. Methods: This research is a qualitative study with a phenomenological approach. Data were collected through in-depth interviews using purposive sampling techniques, and analyzed using Colaizzi’s method. The participants in this study consisted of 4 individuals. Results: The study generated 13 themes, including parents’ knowledge of sexuality education, changes noticed by mothers as their children enter puberty, parental responses, teaching techniques for sexuality education, barriers to providing sexuality education to children with special needs, emotional challenges experienced by parents when teaching sexuality education, parents’ strategies for overcoming barriers and preventing sexual abuse, and parents’ motivation to provide sexuality education to children with special needs. Conclusion: Parents play an important role in providing sexuality education. Suggestion: Health professionals, educational institutions, and the government are advised to provide comprehensive sexuality education programs for mothers with children with special needs. Further research should focus on more effective educational techniques. Keywords: Children with Special Needs, Parental Experience. Sexuality Education
