Abstract
Background: Diabetes Mellitus (DM) is a metabolic disorder characterized by elevated blood glucose levels due to impaired insulin production, insulin action, or both. Hypoglycemia is an acute complication of DM that can recur, worsen the condition, and even be fatal. Prevention of hypoglycemia can be achieved by increasing patients’ knowledge through health education using booklets as an effective information medium. Objective: To determine the relationship and effect of education using booklets on the level of knowledge about first aid for hypoglycemia in adult patients with diabetes mellitus. Methods: This quantitative study employed a Quasi-Experimental design with a Non-Equivalent Control Group approach. The population consisted of all adult DM patients at Pakjo Public Health Center, totaling 42 respondents. Sampling was conducted using total sampling, with 37 respondents meeting inclusion and exclusion criteria. The instrument used was a knowledge questionnaire on hypoglycemia. Data were analyzed using Chi-Square test and ordinal logistic regression. Results: From both groups, the median age was 49 years, with an average duration of illness of 5.27 years. Most respondents were female, had basic education, and had type 2 diabetes mellitus. In the pre-test, the control group’s knowledge level was in the poor category for 14 respondents (37.8%), while in the intervention group, good and fair categories each accounted for 8 respondents (21.6%). In the post-test, the control group had 11 respondents (29.7%) in the fair category, while the intervention group had 16 respondents (43.2%) in the good category. The obtained p-value was <0.001. Conclusion: There is a significant effect of providing education on the knowledge level of patients with diabetes mellitus. Recommendation: Respondents are able to apply first aid for hypoglycemia based on the education that has been provided.
