Abstract
Background: Self-esteem is crucial for adolescent psychological development, playing a role in shaping behavior, attitudes, and how they face life's challenges. During adolescence, physical, emotional, and social changes often lead to internal conflict and low self-esteem. If left unaddressed, this can lower self-esteem and negatively impact mental health, social relationships, and academic achievement. One intervention that can help is Group Activity Therapy (GAT). Objective: To determine the difference in adolescents’ self-esteem before and after being given TAK at a private junior high school in Palembang. Methods: This study used a quasi-experimental non-equivalent control group design. The sample consisted of 62 respondents (control = 31, intervention = 31), using a total sampling technique. The questionnaire used was the Coopersmith Self-Esteem Inventory (CSEI). Data analysis used the Wilcoxon test. Result: The results showed that the majority of respondents were aged 13–15 years with a median of 13 years and the majority were female (54.8%). Before being given GAT, the control group showed 25.8% of respondents had low self-esteem and 74.3% had high self-esteem, after GAT it became 22.6% low and 77.4% high. The intervention group before GAT, 61.3% of respondents had low self-esteem and 38.7% high, while after GAT it became 25.8% low and 74.2% high. The Wilcoxon test in the control group showed p = 0.763 (p ≥ 0.05), so there was no significant difference between adolescent self-esteem before and after being given GAT in the control group. Conclusion: GAT has been proven effective in increasing adolescent. Suggestion:GAT can be used as an alternative psychosocial intervention applied in schools and health services to help adolescents with low self-esteem. Key Words: Adolescents, Group Activity Therapy, Self-Esteem
