Abstract

This research aims to determine the financial literacy abilities of students at SD Xaverius 3 Palembang. The financial literacy skills of the students are viewed in four aspects, namely, basic financial understanding, financial management skills, reducing consumptive behavior, and building financial independence. The method used is descriptive qualitative research with data collection techniques through triangulation methods including observation, interviews, questionnaires, and documentation. The subjects of the research consist of 247 students from grades I-VI at SD Xaverius 3 Palembang. The sample was taken through purposive sampling based on the criteria of students from SD Xaverius 3 Palembang, obtaining parental permission, and saving at school. The total sample used was 20 students from grades IV-VI. The research findings indicate that the financial literacy skills of the students of Xaverius 3 Elementary School in Palembang have several important findings. In the aspect of basic financial understanding, the students are able to comprehend basic concepts of money or finance, the function of money in daily life, the difference between paper money and coins, as well as the types of goods that can be purchased with money. In the aspect of financial management skills, the students are capable of managing their pocket money by setting aside some to save and thinking carefully before purchasing expensive items. However, there are still some students who are unable to keep track of their shopping or spending. In the aspect of reducing consumer behavior, the students have managed to reduce consumerist behavior by prioritizing needs over wants and refusing friends' invitations to buy toys or new items when they do not have enough money. In terms of building financial independence, the students have developed financial independence because they have made efforts to try to earn money on their own and have aspirations regarding their future finances.
