Abstract
Background: In microbiological examinations, one of the most commonly encountered bacteria is Escherichia coli. This bacterium frequently infects humans and is known as both a commensal organism and a pathogenic organism. The antibiotic commonly used to treat Escherichia coli infections is ceftriaxone, which is available in injectable form. The drawback of ceftriaxone disk antibiotics is their high cost and limited availability, while the advantages of injectable ceftriaxone are its lower cost, the ability to prepare it independently, and the easy availability of materials for making antibiotic disks. Injectable ceftriaxone can be used as an alternative when laboratories face difficulties in obtaining commercial ceftriaxone disks. Objective: To determine the inhibition zone diameter of Escherichia coli bacteria using ceftriaxone discs and ceftriaxone injections. Method: This research is a static group comparison with a pre-experimental research design. Each treatment group consisted of 16 samples, calculated using the Federer formula. The data were analyzed using the Wilcoxon test with a 95% confidence level. Results: The average inhibition zone diameter of Escherichia coli bacteria using the ceftriaxone disk antibiotic was 32.3125 mm, while the inhibition zone diameter of Escherichia coli bacteria using the ceftriaxone injection antibiotic was 27 mm, , with a significance value of 0.000 (ρ < 0.05). Conclusion: There is a difference in the inhibition zone diameter of Escherichia coli bacteria using the ceftriaxone disk antibiotic and ceftriaxone injection antibiotics. Suggestion: Further research is needed regarding variations in antibiotic concentration and optimal soaking time of antibiotic discs using filter paper.
