Abstract

Background : The identification of disease-causing agents can be determined through bacteriological diagnosis and antibiotic susceptibility testing. The use of antibiotics must be precise and based on the accurate identification of the infectious agent. One important factor in susceptibility testing is the type of culture medium used. CLSI designates MH as the standard medium for antibiotic susceptibility testing. There are similarities in the composition of NA and MC and their ability to support the growth of various types of bacteria. Nutrient Agar and MacConkey may serve as alternative media for antibiotic susceptibility testing. Objective : To compare the diameter inhibition zones of Escherichia coli on MacConkey and Nutrient Agar media with those on Mueller Hinton. Methods :The type of this research is preexperimental with Static Group Comparison. The research was conducted at the Microbiology Laboratory, Faculty of Health Sciences, Musi Charitas Catholic University. The research data total used 60 data. The data analysis used is Mann–Whitney U test. Result :The average diameter of the inhibition zone on Mueller-Hinton was 30.80 mm, MacConkey was 33.60 mm, and Nutrient Agar was 34.85 mm. Mann Whitney result was 0.000 (p<0.05) Conclusion : There was a significant difference diameter of the inhibition zones of Escherichia coli between MC and NA compared to MH (p<0.05). Suggestion : For the next research is recommended to use different types of media, antibiotics, and bacterial strains, and more largest data sample.
