Abstract

This study aims to analyze the effect of work passion and psychological contract perception on employee performance in pempek culinary MSMEs in Palembang City, with a focus on pempek shops as representations of local cultural heritage. A quantitative method was employed, using purposive sampling to distribute questionnaires to 100 respondents. Instrument validity and reliability were tested, and data were analyzed using multiple linear regression with SPSS software. The results indicate that both work passion and psychological contract have a positive and significant effect on employee performance, both partially and simultaneously. These findings reinforce the Social Exchange Theory framework, which emphasizes the importance of reciprocal relationships in shaping work behavior. The novelty of this research lies in applying this theory to a culturally embedded informal sector, which remains underrepresented in performance management literature. In terms of sustainability, the study highlights the need for relationship-based management systems rooted in psychological rewards, fairness, and intrinsic motivation to maintain long-term productivity and support the preservation of pempek businesses. The findings are expected to provide practical insights for business owners and academics in developing human resource strategies within creative economy sectors rooted in local traditions.
