Abstract

This research aims to determine the relationship between self-control and peer conformity with smoking behavior, where the research subjects were 130 junior high school students in Palembang City. Sampling was carried out using purposive sampling technique. Therefore, the objectives of this research are: 1) To see whether or not there is a relationship between self-control and smoking behavior. 2) To see whether or not there is a relationship between conformity and smoking behavior. 3) To see whether or not there is a relationship between self-control and conformity and smoking behavior. Hypothesis testing uses multiple regression tests where the results obtained between self-control and smoking behavior have a significance value greater than 0.05 (0.05 > 0.05) and the calculated t value (2.829 > 1.928). In the relationship between conformity and smoking behavior, a significance value of less than 0.05 (0.00 < 0.05) was obtained and the t value was greater than 1.928 (3.473 > 1.928). Meanwhile, hypothesis testing with the F test obtained significant results between self-control and conformity with smoking behavior of 0.00 and F count of 14.162. This means that the more self-control and conformity a student has, the higher their smoking behavior will be. Meanwhile, the results of the coefficient of determination test show that the relationship in this study was 18.2% and the remaining 81.8% was explained by other factors not studied.
