Abstract

Background: Hemodialysis is a renal replacement therapy for patients with end-stage renal disease, aimed at reducing toxin levels in the body due to uremic syndrome in chronic kidney failure patients. Complications often arising from hemodialysis include hypotension and muscle cramps, which can induce both physiological and psychological stress in patients. Anxiety is a common psychological impact experienced by patients undergoing hemodialysis. Family support and coping mechanisms are significant factors that influence patient anxiety. Objective: This study aims to investigate the relationship between family support and coping mechanisms with anxiety levels in patients undergoing hemodialysis. Research Method: This research employed a quantitative analytical survey design using a cross-sectional approach and Kendall-tau test. A sample of 56 respondents was selected using purposive sampling techniques. The variables measured in this study were family support, coping mecanisms and anxiety levels. Results: Univariate analysis revealed that 44 respondents (78.6%) reported good family support, while 28 respondents (50.0%) exhibited adaptive coping mechanisms. Furthermore, 20 respondents (35.7%) experienced mild anxiety levels. Bivariate results indicated that there was no significant relationship between family support and anxiety levels with a p-value of 0.519 (p > 0.05), reflecting a very low correlation (0.079) with a positive relationship direction. Additionally, there was no significant relationship between coping mechanisms and anxiety levels, with a p-value of 0.049 (p > 0.05), demonstrating a moderate correlation (-0.244) with a negative relationship direction. Conclusion: The coping mechanisms utilized by patients influence the anxiety levels of patients undergoing hemodialysis. Recommendations: It is suggested that all patients develop effective coping mechanisms to lower their anxiety levels.
