Abstract
Background: Critical care is provided to manage severe and unstable conditions such as respiratory failure, septic shock, loss of consciousness, stroke, and kidney failure, requiring close observation and appropriate actions by professional healthcare providers. The Intensive Care Unit (ICU) is a unit dedicated to intensive care and strict monitoring. Nurses working in the Intensive Care Unit need to have undergone specific training to meet basic human needs. Nurses play a crucial role in the care process and must be effective communicators, not only with patients but also with their families, ensuring that relatives who are not present during the patient's stay in the Intensive Care Unit do not feel anxious and understand the patient's condition. Objective: This research aims to explore the experiences of nurses in caring for critical patients in the Intensive Care Unit. Methods: This study used a qualitative research design with a phenomenological approach. The study involved 5 participants selected using purposive sampling criteria. Data analysis was conducted using Colaizzi’s method. Results: The study identified 4 themes: challenges of working in the ICU, teamwork in ICU care, nurses' emotional responses, and the role of nurses in supporting families. Recommendation: Nurses should enhance their knowledge and skills, as well as develop empathy and patience, especially when supporting the families of patients treated in the Intensive Care Unit. Keywords: Intensive Care Unit; septic shock; stroke; kidney failure
