Abstract

Background: Pain management is a crucial aspect of nursing care in the Emergency Department (ED), especially for patients with musculoskeletal trauma such as fractures. Poorly managed pain can affect patient comfort and impact physiological, psychological, and healing processes. ED nurses play a key role in effectively managing pain. Their experience in pain management for musculoskeletal trauma patients demonstrates their essential role in reducing pain through various pharmacological and non-pharmacological approaches. Objective: This study aims to explore the experiences of ED nurses in managing pain in patients with musculoskeletal trauma. Methods: This study employs a qualitative design with a phenomenological approach. The participants consist of 5 ED nurses selected using purposive sampling based on predetermined criteria. Data were collected through in-depth interviews with 7 questions from an interview guide and analyzed using the Colaizzi method. Results: The study identified four main themes: the role of ED nurses in caring for fracture patients, pain management in fracture patients, barriers and challenges in pain management, and solutions to improve pain management effectiveness. Suggestions: ED nurses are expected to continuously enhance their knowledge and skills in pain management through training, seminars, and updated literature. Additionally, effective communication with patients and their families is essential to support successful pain management. Keywords: Fractures, Nurses, Pain Management.
