Abstract
Background: The impact of surgery is pain of varying severity. Almost 80% of postoperative patients feel acute pain complaints after the effects of the anesthetic wear off. Postoperative pain requires proper treatment. Pain management can be pharmacological and non-pharmacological methods. One of the non-pharmacological management is the administration of lemon aromatherapy containing limonene, a substance that can help stabilize the nervous system, produce a calming effect, and reduce the perception of pain. Objective: To determine the difference in pain scale before and after lemon aromatherapy in patients with major postoperative surgery. Methods: Quantitative research, using one group pretest-posttest pre-experiment, purposive sampling of 50 respondents. Data collection was carried out by giving lemon aromatherapy twice, data collection using Numeric Rating Scale (NRS) measurements. Wilcoxon Signed Rank Test statistical test. Results: After the first lemon aromatherapy, 66% of the respondents experienced moderate pain and as many as 84% of the respondents experienced mild pain after the second lemon aromatherapy. The results of the Wilcoxon Signed Rank Test were obtained in the first and second interventions, and the difference in pain scale before and after receiving lemon aromatherapy in postoperative patients with a major p-value of 0.001 < 0.05 was obtained. Suggestion: The use of lemon aromatherapy can be used as one of the interventions in independent nursing care in non-pharmacological pain management.
