Abstract

Background: Diabetes mellitus is a collection of symptoms of a disease with increased blood sugar levels which causes the production of insulin hormone in the body to decrease so that the body's cells do not receive sugar intake.Metabolic changes in DM patients that cause decreased sensory and motor nerve function are complications with neuropathy disorders resulting in diabetic wounds. Therefore, it is necessary to prevent diabetic wounds by performing foot care. Lack of knowledge can affect the occurrence of diabetic wounds in DM patients. So that increased knowledge is needed so that DM patients know how to prevent diabetic wounds by performing good foot care. Objective:The differences in knowledge about diabetic ulcers were studied before and after being given Foot Self-Care education to diabetes mellitus patients. Method: This research uses a quantitative type, with a pre-experimental one group prepost test design. The sampling technique is purposive sampling. The sample consisted of 49 respondents. The measuring tool uses a foot self-care knowledge questionnaire designed by researchers. Data were analyzed using the Wilcoxon test. Results:The majority of knowledge before being given education was sufficient with 32 respondents (65.3%), while the majority of knowledge after being given education was good with 10 respondents (20.4%). The results of bivariate analysis showed that there was a difference between knowledge before being given foot self-care education (p = 0.000). Suggestion:Nurses need to increase innovation in foot self-care education for diabetes mellitus sufferers with a more modern and interactive approach, using technology and more personalized and targeted educational methods.
