Abstract

Background: Preschool children are susceptible to various health problems, especially bacterial infections, viruses or injuries, so they have to undergo treatment in hospital. During the treatment process at the hospital, children will experience distress both physically and psychologically. The impact of a child's trauma during hospitalization affects the child's development and the child's healing process during treatment, so atraumatic treatment is needed. To provide atraumatic care, skills and experience are needed from pediatric nurses. The role of pediatric nurses is as a provider of nursing care who can provide mental support by listening to children and family complaints, helping them overcome problems that may arise during hospital treatment. Purpose: This study aims to explore nurses' experiences in implementing atraumatic care for preschool-aged children who are hospitalized. Methods: This research uses a qualitative research design with a phenomenological approach. There were 5 participants taken based on participant criteria using Purposive Sampling. Data analysis was carried out using Colaizzi analysis. Result: This research produced 10 themes, namely the child's response when being treated, the nurse's feelings, the nurse's behavior, the nurse's perspective, the nurse's ability and attitude, the child's response and attitude after atraumatic care, barriers to implementing atraumatic care, efforts to overcome obstacles, the impact of child trauma, forms application of atraumatic care. Suggestion: Nurses must further increase their knowledge and skills in approaching children with more varied methods and techniques to support the implementation of atraumatic care.
