Abstract

Background : Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a serious condition that lasts for a long time and causes an increase in blood glucose levels due to the body's inability to produce adequate amounts of the insulin hormone or to use the insulin produced effectively. Glucose tests in the laboratory based on the time of blood collection consist of random glucose, fasting glucose and 2 hour postprandial glucose. When checking blood glucose, serum can be obtained in two ways, namely centrifugation and not centrifugation (sedimentation). The serum obtained was centrifuged, the blood in the tube was frozen for 15 minutes then centrifuged, while the serum that was not centrifuged was left for 90 minutes. Objectiv : To determine the difference in glucose levels between centrifuged and uncentrifuged serum. Methods : This research uses observational analytics using a cross sectional approach. Observational is research where there is no treatment of one of the independent and dependent variables, and cross sectional is a research design by taking measurements at the same time between the independent and dependent variables. Result : The average glucose level in centrifuged serum was 81.36 mg/dL. The average glucose level in uncentrifuged serum was 82.36 mg/dL. Conclusion : There was no difference in the results of checking glucose levels using a chemistry analyzer in centrifuged and uncentrifuged serum with a value (2-tailed sig) of 0.678 > 0.05. Suggestion : For temporary glucose testing, it is not recommended to use serum that has not been centrifuged because the resulting glucose level is falsely low.
