Abstract

This research aims to analyze the role of parents in the reading ability of class II students at SD Xaverius 7 Palembang. This type of research is descriptive qualitative research. The subjects in this research were class II students, homeroom teachers and parents of class II students. The data collection techniques used were observation, interviews, direct tests, questionnaires, documentation, and triangulation methods. The data analysis technique uses the Milles and Huberman model with stages of data reduction, data presentation and drawing conclusions. The results of the research show that all parents play a role in the reading ability of class II students at SD Xaverius 7 Palembang. The role of parents as friends and being able to communicate with children is 88.19%. The role of parents as teachers and mentors is 82.47%. The role of parents as providers of reward and punishment is 79.44%. The role of parents as a motivator is 79.14%. The role of parents as facilitators is 65.55%. So it can be concluded that of the five roles, the role of parents with the highest percentage is the role of parents as friends and being able to communicate with children at 88.19%. Meanwhile, the role of parents with the lowest percentage is the role of parents as facilitators at 65.55%. Keywords: Role of Parents, Reading Ability, Elementary School
