Abstract

Background: The main specimen for AST examination is serum. Serum is obtained from blood collected in a vacutainer tube without anticoagulants that is centrifuged. The vacutainer tubes that can be used are plain vacutainer tube and vacutainer serum separator tube (SST). Polymer gels in vacutainer SST can affect the levels of certain analytes due to the presence of materials from the gel that can absorb into the serum, thus affecting the test results. Objective: To determine the difference AST levels in serum using plain vacutainer tube and vacutainer serum separator tube. Method: The study used observational analytic with a cross sectional approach. Subjects used were students of DIV Medical Laboratory Technology study program Musi Charitas Chatolic University Palembang totaling 35 subjects. Serum samples were examined using a chemistry analyzer with the IFCC method. Results: Average AST levels using plain vacutainer tube and serum vacutainer serum separator tube were 26,22 U/L and 26,56 U/L, respectively. Statistical results using Wilcoxon test showed no significant difference with a p value = 0,062>0,05. Conclusion: There was no significant difference between AST levels using plain vacutainer tube and vacutainer serum separator tube. Sugestion: Future researchers can conduct similar studies with more subjects and use a variety of subjects that can affect the results.
