Abstract

Background: Diabetes Mellitus (DM) is a chronic disease caused by the pancreas not producing enough insulin or the body not being able to use insulin effectively, characterized by high blood sugar. Individuals can get DM if they consume excess carbohydrates, lack of sleep, are lazy to move, smoke, and are stressed even if there is no family history. This condition can cause heart disease, stroke, kidney failure and even death. DM patients must adhere to diet, medication and good stress management so that blood sugar within normal limits. Method: This research uses quantitative research with an analytical survey design with a cross sectional approach. The sample used was 75 respondents with purposive sampling technique. Data analysis used the Kendall Tau test. Results: The results of the study showed that the majority of respondents adhered to the diet, 53 (70.7%) people, 33 (44%) adhered to medication, 52 (69.3%) respondents with moderate levels of stress, and respondents with Blood sugar values were normal for 65 (86.7%) people. Bivariate tests showed that there was a relationship between the level of diet compliance and blood sugar (p-value <0.001), the level of medication compliance with blood sugar (p-value 0.001), and the level of stress and current blood sugar (p-value <0.001). Suggestion: DM patients are required to adhere to diet, comply with medication and control stress and follow the DM program at Charitas Hospital Palembang. Hospital staff are actively involved in providing education and promotion of the DM program at Charitas Hospital Palembang, in discharge planning, programs at the hospital are added in an effort to control blood sugar for DM patients, to increase patient interest in joining the DM Club activity program Charitas Hospital Palembang.
