Abstract

Background: Diabetes mellitus is a chronic hyperglycemic condition accompanied by various metabolic disorders that occur in the pancreas causing the body to not produce enough insulin, resulting in complications, one of which is on the skin and feet, namely wounds. Diabetic wound care is to avoid infection, eradicate existing bacteria, or stop their growth on the skin and other body tissues. Objective: This study aims to determine the difference in the level of knowledge before and after being given health education about wound care to clients with diabetes mellitus and their families using booklets and video media. Method: This type of research is quantitative with a pre-experimental one group pretest-posttest method. The sampling technique uses accidental sampling technique, population 30 respondents. The data collection tool uses a questionnaire. The data analysis used is univariate and bivariate analysis. Results: The majority of respondents aged 46-55 years were 12 (40%), female as many as 23 (76.6%), with secondary education levels as many as 22 (73.3%), and duration of suffering ≤5 years as many as 9 ( 30%), knowledge before 21 (70%) knowledge after 30 (100%). The results of the Wilcoxon Signed Rank Test showed that there was a difference in the level of knowledge before and after being given health education about wound care for diabetes mellitus clients and their families, p-value 0.001 < 0.05. Conclusion: It is hoped that the results of this study will enable respondents to carry out wound care independently at home with the help of their family, so that they can prevent injuries from occurring.
