Abstract

Background: Premature babies are infants born before 37 weeks of gestation regardless of birth weight. Premature infants require care in the NICU (Neonatal Intensive Care Unit) and are at risk of health disorders in early life, often requiring numerous invasive procedures. Invasive procedures in the care of premature infants can result in pain, impacting both short-term changes in behavioral responses and long-term developmental delays. Objective: This research aims to explore nurses' experiences in implementing pain management during invasive procedures on premature infants in the NICU. Methods: This study employs a qualitative design with a phenomenological approach. Purposive sampling is used to select 5 participants. Data analysis is conducted using the Colaizzi method. Results: The research yields 9 themes: (1) frequently performed invasive procedures on premature babies, (2) pain management during invasive procedures on premature infants, (3) infants' behavioral responses to painful stimuli, (4) nurses' perspectives on implementing pain management during invasive procedures on premature infants, (5) nurses' feelings about implementing pain management during invasive procedures on premature infants, (6) obstacles faced by nurses in implementing pain management during invasive procedures on premature infants, (7) efforts to overcome obstacles, (8) environmental responses during invasive procedures, and (9) the perceived trauma response in infants after invasive procedures. Conclusion: These themes provide insights to enhance nursing practices and the quality of care for premature babies. Suggestion : The findings of this study are expected to contribute as additional literature sources in the field of pediatric nursing and can be further developed by subsequent researchers using different methods, variables, and involving a larger number of participants. Keywords: Premature infants, invasive procedures, pain management.
