Abstract
Background : COPD often occurs in individuals over 40 years of age. Symptoms of respiratory problems that appear are usually shortness of breath that occurs continuously and tends to get worse. With symptoms of progressive shortness of breath, this disease results in weakening of the resistance and strength of the diaphragm which plays a role in the emergence of hypercapnia, shortness of breath and decreased ability to walk. This makes the patient inactive and has an impact on his quality of life decreasing. Objective : The research aims to see the relationship between the degree of shortness of breath and the quality of life in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. Methods : This research is a type of analytical research with a cross-sectional approach. The research sample was COPD patients who visited the Outpatient Installation at Siloam Silampari Hospital, Lubuklinggau. A total of 71 respondents, the sampling technique used purposive sampling. The research data were analyzed using the Kendall-tau test. Result : The results showed that the majority of respondents with mild-moderate shortness of breath were 37 respondents (52.1%), with good quality of life, namely 42 respondents (59.2%). Data analysis shows that there is a significant relationship between the degree of shortness of breath and the quality of life in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (p value 0.000 (<0.05). Suggestion : It is hoped that respondents will be able to carry out routine checks and avoid causes that aggravate the degree of shortness of breath. always check the degree of shortness of breath experienced so that further treatment can be given so that it does not reduce the respondent's quality of life
