Abstract
Background : The main sample for creatinine examination is serum obtained from the blood centrifugation process in a tube without anticoagulants. Vacutainer tubes that can be used include vacutainer plain tubes and vacutainer serum separator tubes which contain clot activator and gel separator. The gel components are unstable to certain analytes and may cause absorption of drugs and some steroid hormones into the gel. Objective : To determine creatinine levels using vacutainer plain tubes and vacutainer serum separator tubes with chemistry analyzer. Methods : This research is a quantitative study with an analytic observational research design with a cross sectional approach. The subjects in this study were 31 female students who met the inclusion and exclusion criteria. Venous blood was collected in plain vacutainer tubes and serum separator vacutainer tubes as much as ± 2 ml which were then centrifuged to obtain serum which was examined using Architect Plus c4000. The statistical test uses the Wilcoxon test with a 95% confidence level. Results : The mean creatinine level using a plain vacutainer tube was 0.61 mg/dL. The mean creatinine level using a vacutainer serum separator tube was 0.59 mg/dL. Using Wilcoxon's signed-rank test, p = 0.001 (p < 0.05). Conclusion : There was a significant difference in creatinine levels using vacutainer plain tubes and vacutainer serum separator tubes. Suggestion : Carrying out further research on the effect of the gel composition on serum on the chemistry of clinical analytes such as uric acid and cystatin C and conducting studies using a larger number of samples with different subject variations. Vacutainer plain tubes are recommended as blood collection tubes used for creatinine examination.
