Abstract

Background: Old age (elderly) is a condition that will occur in the life of every human being who grows old, not only starting from a certain time but starting from the beginning of life which is one of the natural things for someone who has gone through the stages of his life starting from neonates, toddler, pre school, school, youth to old age. Objective: To identify the relationship between blood pressure and body mass index with the risk of falling in the elderly at the Harapan Kita Social Institution for the Elderly Method: This research method uses a quantitative correlation design with a cross sectional approach, with a total sample of 35 respondents taken using a total sampling technique and the data collection tool uses a fall risk questionnaire (MFS) and observation sheets. Data analysis used the Kendall tau-b test. Results : The results showed that 12 respondents (34.3%) had normal blood pressure, 12 respondents (34.3%) had pre-hypertension, 7 respondents (20.0%) stage I hypertension and 4 respondents (11, 4%), and respondents who had BMI in the thin category were 30 respondents (85,7%), normal were 4 respondents (11,4%) and obese were 1 respondents (2,9%), and the elderly were at risk of falling the highest was 19 respondents (54.3%). The Kendall'tau_b statistical test results obtained a p-value of 0.006 <0.05, meaning that there was a relationship between blood pressure and the risk of falling and the Kendall'tau_b statistical test results obtained a p-value of 0.33 < 0.05, meaning that there is a relationship between body mass index and the risk of falling in the elderly. Suggestion : The results of this study are expected to provide information for Harapan Kita Indralaya Social Institution, especially related to blood pressure and body mass index by maintaining normal body weight and stable blood pressure in order to control the risk of falling.
