Abstract

Background : Breast cancer is the most common type of cancer suffered by women. An effort to detect breast cancer that every woman can do is BSE examination, by doing BSE regularly it will be known whether there are lumps or abnormalities in the breast early even though they are still small, so that treatment can be carried out earlier and more effectively. But until now the awareness of women to do BSE is still very low. This is due to a lack of education about the importance of doing BSE. Objective : This study aims to determine the effectiveness of audiovisual education about BSE on the knowledge, attitudes and skills of adolescents in breast cancer prevention. Method: Quantitative research with the Pretest-Posttest With Control Group Quasy Experiment method, the sample of this study was 71 respondents with a proportional sampling technique which was divided into 2 groups, namely the intervention group and the control group, the intervention group totaled 36 and the control group totaled 35. The data collection tool used a questionnaire and observation sheet. Bivariate data analysis used the Wilcoxon Signed Rank Test and the Mann-Whitney U Test. Results : The results of this study showed that there were significant differences pre and post in the variable knowledge (p<0.001), attitude (p=0.001), and skills (p<0.001) in the intervention group. There was no significant difference between the pre-test and post-test in the variables of knowledge (p=0.405), attitude (p=0.564) and skills (p=1.000) in the control group. The effectiveness of audiovisual education showed significant differences between the intervention and control groups in the variables of knowledge (p=0.021), attitudes (p=0.068), and skills (p<0.001). Suggestion: It is hoped that the research that has been done can be developed by holding BSE demonstrations and practices directly to achieve better knowledge, attitudes and skills.
